More About Changing Leaves Play Therapy

Our ethos

At Changing Leaves our ethos is to connect, explore, and support children and their families through their difficult experiences and needs with play. Using the theories of Virginia Axline, Carl Rodgers, Garry Landreth, Sue Jennings, and many others we use an integrative, holistic approach to supporting you and your kiddo. By helping them see their experiences and futures differently we can change our leaves, change our lives.

Through play, children can communicate what they don’t have words for and express their feelings, and be supported to find the words for them. Your kiddo will be given the space and time to move through what can be scary or worrying feelings and together make them comfortable and/or positive.

In a session, your kiddo will have access to several different mediums of play to explore with, these include;

-       Arts and crafts

-       Clay

-       Sand tray and water

-       Music

-       Puppets

-       Embodiment, projection, and role (EPR)

-       Movement

-       Books and stories

-       Creative visualisations

-       Games

These items will be accessible throughout and in all sessions that will run for 50 minutes once a week.

We will first have an initial interview where we will discuss your and your kiddo's needs through questionnaires and discussion to make sure everyone is comfortable with the process. In this meeting, we will look at areas of social, emotional, conduct, hyperactivity, and peer relationships as well as trauma histories.  At every sixth session, I shall meet with you to review how the process is going for yourself as well as your kiddo.

As this is therapy for your kiddo, I will be following the therapist-client confidentiality protocol that means I will not be informing you of what happens in sessions unless your kiddo has agreed that it is ok or I need to inform you of an issue for their safety.

Within the sessions, your kiddo will be given the space to play, or not, however, they choose, but they will need to stay within these three boundaries.

1.      They are not to hurt themselves

2.      I am not to be hurt

3.      Nothing in the room is to be hurt

In the sessions, your kiddo will experience these things from me.

-       A relationship will be built between me and them and they will be given time and space to explore their inner worlds in relation to their outer worlds.

-       I will reflect on their play that will bring awareness to their feelings, thoughts, and movements to help create self-awareness.

-       With the use of the different mediums, your kiddo will be able to experience and express their thoughts and feelings of their past, present, and future and be accepted in those expressions.

-       By creating a safe space and time to explore, we can build acceptance and understanding of their experience.
